Of course, everyone of sound mind should want to be a winner in life. And, of course this will mean something different to each person. However, it is not possessions or financial wealth that make a winner; these are only pieces of the equation. In my opinion, the main item that constitutes a true winner is abundance! Yes, when one has built and maintained abundance in all areas of life, they are indeed a true winner.

In fact, I have seen many so-called successful people who were really losers at their core. How many ‘successful’ people have we seen that seem to self-destruct, or are just a loser-in-waiting? Success over time is the measure of a winner. If one’s life is based on strong footings – motives – and one has been true to those footings, and has withstood the test of time, that is winning the game of life!

So, here are 5 top characteristics of a real winner:

1. Unswerving integrity.

Have you ever sat down to seriously make a “top 10 list of your principles”, or a listing of your internal value set? How many people have neglected to do this and give it honest attention? This means listing out the items that make you who you are or who you want to be in life, your inner values. These are the main principles that you stand for and these cannot be compromised, bent, or broken.

In construction, a footing is sunk into the ground and becomes the underlying piece of a foundation of a building. It cannot move or bend and is extremely strong. That footing supports the entire weight and integrity of the building structure. In life, your integrity values – your motives in life – are your footing that supports the structure of your life. It must be in alignment with the structure (of your life) that it supports. It must be unswerving.

2. No quit.

Winners never quitperiod. If today is a bad day, that’s okay. Tomorrow is a new day and you can begin again. Most of us do not remember learning to walk, but it is clear that we did not quit trying. If you had given up, you would not be walking. You fell time and again when learning to walk. All success is built on failures. Nothing more need be said.

3. Focus on motives and goals.

It is too easy to be tempted by this or that in life. There are perhaps more ways to fail than to succeed. You must know and conquer your personal temptations and weaknesses. If you cannot get in control or balance, then you must seek help. The truth is that you cannot afford not to do this. We all must remain focused.

When success is being tasted and good things begin to happen, more dangers appear that can derail us from our path to abundance and success. Perhaps the most prevalent danger is complacency. We cannot get lazy or rest on our laurels; again, focus is the key. When things are going well, this is the time to pour it on!

4. Relentless action towards goals.

There is only one way to pour it on: action, consistent action! We must ‘touch our goals’ each day in our minds (or physically whenever possible). Goals mean nothing if we do not constantly visit our goals and take continual action on each of them.

I like the analogy of the mountain climber. Where would the climber be if they stopped taking consistent action and stopped climbing? They would no longer be a mountain climber would they? Yes, the climber metaphor is an oversimplification, but an accurate representation of the importance of action! We must be relentless in taking action by breaking our master plans down into bite-sized bits each day.

5. Flexibility.

Lastly, we must recognize that we are not perfect, nor is the world around us. Even the best made plans will change. In fact, change is one of the few universal constants; all things change in time. We must embrace change.

The way to embrace change is to be flexible about most everything. Flexibility means allowing for a bad day, or a change in our goals, or an adjustment to our plans. Flexibility is the glue that holds the balance in our lives in place and makes failure impossible, so long as we are flexible enough to keep winning in our sights.

In conclusion, there are many paths to being a winner (to abundance and success), and yet there are at least as many – if not more – paths to losing. Winning becomes much more achievable when we practice these 5 characteristics of being a winner. I wish you a lifetime of winning abundance and success.
