I TOTALLY agree with Malaysian Institute of Management general council member Zul Baharom’s call to nurture and retain professionals whom we already have in the country.

While the effort to set up Talent Corp to attract thousands of Malaysians working abroad is laudable, we should also look at tapping professionals who are still in this country.

In order to attract those working abroad, we must understand why they chose to work abroad, or in most cases, emigrated. I have a lot of friends who emigrated and a lot more working on their emigration applications.

Other than better remunerations and living conditions, there are other factors involved in their decision to emigrate. The three main contributing factors are:

> Corruption, which is a waste of taxpayers’ money and we want those involved caught and prosecuted.

> Discrimination where on and of, we see people making destructive remarks and trying to stir racial tension for their

own agenda. Such people should be punished.

> Education, or the lack of it. We should benchmark Singapore and Australia since these two countries are attracting many white-collar immigrants. We should not believe that by learning a lot of subjects like what we are doing now will make our next generation smarter.

They need to learn about values like honesty, integrity, mutual respect etc. It is the lack of values that’s creating problems to society. We should also adopt a fairer and more transparent system and rewards based on results.

If our Government is serious in attracting Malaysians living abroad to come home, we need to work on the above with urgency. Once there
